Grote Markt, Antwerp

Antwerp, Belgium

History

The main square of Antwerp's old town, framed by guild houses with gilded façades, the town hall and a fountain with Brabo throwing the giant's hand. Walk on to the cathedral spire, only a few minutes away.

The Grote Markt is the heart of Antwerp's old town, not far from the River Scheldt. The Renaissance town hall was built between 1561 and 1565 on the foundations of a predecessor that had burned down. The guild houses along the sides were mostly rebuilt in the 19th and early 20th centuries; only the house of the St George's Guild of archers (no. 7) still has its 16th-century façade.

In front of the town hall stands the Brabo Fountain by Jef Lambeaux, dating from 1887. It depicts the legend of Silvius Brabo, who cuts off the hand of the giant Druon Antigoon and throws it into the water. Around the square you will find cafés and restaurants, and in winter there is a Christmas market and an ice rink. The square itself needs only 30 to 45 minutes; the cathedral is just a few minutes' walk away.
