Grand Canyon National Park – South Rim
Grand Canyon Village, AZ
A mile deep and up to 18 miles across. The South Rim is open all year. Watch sunset from Hopi Point or Mather Point.
At the South Rim, the Grand Canyon sits at an average elevation of about 2,100 m (7,000 feet), and at its deepest it drops roughly 1,800 m (6,000 feet) to the Colorado River. Near Grand Canyon Village it is about 16 km (10 miles) wide, up to 29 km (18 miles) at its widest, and it runs for some 446 km (277 miles) along the river. It was carved only in the last five to six million years, yet the oldest rocks exposed here are nearly two billion years old.
The South Rim is open 24 hours a day, year-round. The roughly 11 km (7-mile) Hermit Road, with nine overlooks, is closed to private vehicles from March through November; free shuttle buses then take you to stops such as Hopi Point, which juts far out into the canyon and is a favorite spot for sunset. With close to five million visitors a year, the park is quietest from November to February.
