Gola del Furlo

Acqualagna, Italy

Nature

A deep limestone gorge cut by the Candigliano river, where the ancient Via Flaminia runs beside a tunnel the Romans carved through the rock. Stop at the viewpoints to watch the cliffs rise on both sides; the gorge is also a nature reserve.

The Furlo Gorge is a deep ravine carved by the River Candigliano over millions of years between Monte Pietralata and Monte Paganuccio. The rock walls rise hundreds of metres. The ancient Via Flaminia already ran through this narrow pass; the great Roman gallery was cut into the rock in AD 76 under Emperor Vespasian and is still open to pedestrians and vehicles today. Beside it a smaller, older cutting survives.

The gorge lies within the state nature reserve, founded in 2001 and covering around 3,600 hectares. Golden eagles, peregrine falcons, owls, wolves and porcupines live there, among others. The Terrazza del Furlo, which you reach on a hiking trail, offers a view over the whole gorge. In the nearby municipality of Acqualagna, Italy's "truffle capital", the National Truffle Fair is held every autumn, usually between October and November.
