Girona Old Town

Girona, Spain

History

A compact old town of stepped lanes, a hilltop cathedral and the colourful houses facing the Onyar river. Walk the medieval walls for views over the rooftops; the centre is small and best done on foot.

Girona's old town is compact and easy to explore on foot; a day is enough for the highlights. You reach the cathedral by a broad flight of 90 steps. Along the River Onyar stand tall, colourful houses that are reflected in the water and are among the best-known sights of the city; their present colour scheme dates from 1982.

El Call was the Jewish quarter in the Middle Ages; it lasted until the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and was then sealed off and built over. Today its narrow lanes invite a leisurely stroll, and archaeological finds can be seen in the museum of Jewish history. The Passeig de la Muralla, the path along the city walls, offers views over the rooftops; the eastern sections of the walls were rebuilt between 1983 and 2003. Allow roughly one to two hours for the wall walk.
