Gemini Giant
Wilmington, IL
A 30-foot fiberglass spaceman holding a rocket, one of the best-loved "muffler men" on the old highway.
The Gemini Giant is a fiberglass astronaut about 8.5 m (28 feet) tall holding a rocket, a variation on the advertising figures known as "Muffler Men." In 1965 John Korelc set him up in front of his Launching Pad drive-in on Route 66 in Wilmington, Illinois, after spotting a similar figure at a restaurant convention. For decades the giant was a favorite photo stop along the route.
In 2024 the Joliet Area Historical Museum bought the figure at auction, and experts from the American Giants Museum in Atlanta, Illinois, restored it. Since November 30, 2024, the Gemini Giant has stood, freshly painted with a sparkly finish, on a Route 66 shield pedestal in South Island Park, less than 1.6 km (1 mile) west of its old spot. The park lies just off Route 66 and has a parking lot, a walking trail and a Route 66 monument; the figure is lit up at night. Twenty to thirty minutes is enough for photos and a short stroll.
