Fallingwater
Mill Run, PA
Frank Lloyd Wright's 1935 house cantilevered over a waterfall. Guided tours only, and they sell out.
Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fallingwater in 1935 for the department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann and his wife Liliane. It was built by 1937, and the guest house followed in the late 1930s. Reinforced concrete terraces jut out over Bear Run creek, and local stone was used in the construction. The family were meant to live with the waterfall, not just look at it. In 1963 they handed the estate, along with about 600 hectares of land, to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy, and it has been open as a museum since 1964.
The house can only be visited on a guided tour. Reserve your time slot as early as you can, as tours are often fully booked. The season and opening times change, so check the official website before you go. Fallingwater lies near Mill Run in the Laurel Highlands, south-east of Pittsburgh. Allow half a day for the tour and a stroll around the grounds.
