Palais idéal du Facteur Cheval

Hauterives, France

Oddities

A village postman spent 33 years building this dreamlike palace from stones he picked up on his rounds.

The postman Joseph Ferdinand Cheval began building an "Ideal Palace" in his garden in Hauterives in April 1879, at the age of 43. He gathered the materials – stones, shells and lime mortar – on his postal rounds, which took him more than 30 km a day, and carried them in a wheelbarrow. The work was finished in 1912, after 33 years. The four façades combine echoes of Egyptian tombs, Hindu temples and Swiss chalets with a profusion of animal figures. On the terrace lies the stone said to have tripped him and inspired him to build. In 1969 the Minister of Culture, André Malraux, classified the palace as a Monument historique.

As well as the palace, plan to see the builder's tomb: Cheval spent eight years, until 1920, building the "Tomb of Silence and Endless Rest" in the cemetery of Hauterives, about 1 km from the village. Tickets for the palace can be booked online through the operator.
