Ellicott City Historic District

Ellicott City, MD

History

A steep mill town of granite buildings along Main Street, built into a narrow river valley. Park at a municipal lot and walk down to the shops and the old B&O station, one of the oldest in the country.

Ellicott City began in 1771, when the Quaker brothers John, Andrew and Joseph Ellicott from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, founded a flour mill here on the Patapsco River; Ellicott's Mills grew into one of the largest milling and industrial centers in the East. The brothers persuaded farmers to switch from tobacco to wheat. The historic district, with about 200 buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, climbs Main Street up a narrow river valley.

In 1830 the town became the first terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad outside Baltimore. The 1830 station is considered the oldest surviving railroad station in the United States and is now a museum of railroad history. Because of its location in the valley, the town suffered severe flooding in 2016 and 2018. Allow two to three hours for a walk. Park in one of the public lots and walk down; the streets are steep and narrow, and the town is crowded on weekends.
