Eguisheim

Eguisheim, France

History

A circular village of concentric lanes lined with half-timbered houses and flower boxes, set among Alsace vineyards. Walk the ring on foot and look in at the wine cellars along the way.

Eguisheim stands out for its circular layout: instead of one long main street, the lanes follow the former fortifications in several rings around the central castle. Bruno of Egisheim-Dagsburg, who became Pope Leo IX in 1049, is traditionally regarded as a son of the village, although his exact birthplace is disputed. Wine shaped the buildings too, as deep cellars and large gateways were used for storage and transport. The village includes the Grand Cru sites of Eichberg and Pfersigberg. Eguisheim is one of the "Plus Beaux Villages de France".

Two to three hours are enough for the historic centre, or half a day with a detour into the vineyards. It is best to arrive before 9.30 am, or on a weekday outside the high season, when the lanes are quieter. There is a small Christmas market in Advent. The village lies a few kilometres south of Colmar. Parking is on the edge of the village.
