Durbuy
Durbuy, Belgium
A tiny medieval town in a bend of the Ourthe, with cobbled lanes, stone houses and a small castle above the river. Park at the edge and walk in, as the centre is very compact and busy on summer weekends.
Durbuy lies in a loop of the River Ourthe in the Belgian province of Luxembourg. John I, Count of Luxembourg, granted the town its charter in 1331. Today it markets itself as the "smallest town in the world", although Belgium officially recognises Mesen as its smallest town. The castle of the Ursel family, who have lived there since 1756, dates in its present form from 1880.
In the narrow cobbled lanes of the old town you will see the church of Saint-Nicolas, the historic covered grain market and the topiary garden. Around the town you can canoe on the Ourthe, hike, or visit the dolmens and menhirs at Wéris. One to two hours is enough for a walk through the centre. Leave your vehicle on the edge of town, as the centre is very compact and crowded on summer weekends.
