Dock Square

Kennebunkport, ME

History

The small harbor-side center of Kennebunkport, with shops, seafood stands and the Kennebunk River running past. Park at the edge of town and walk; the main streets are crowded in summer, so mornings are calmer.

Dock Square is the heart of Kennebunkport, where Western Avenue (Route 9), Spring Street and Ocean Avenue meet and the square stretches to the bridge over the Kennebunk River. Many of the shops, boutiques and galleries occupy former homes and 18th-century warehouses. The town began as a fishing and shipbuilding village and has carried its present name since 1821; by the 1870s it had grown into a popular summer destination. Nearby is Walker’s Point, the Bush family’s summer estate.

Allow roughly two to three hours for a stroll and a meal. Mornings are calmest; in high season the square is packed. There is a paid car park close to the square (as of October 2026: fees apply from 1 May to 31 October, free for under 30 minutes) and a free car park on North Street. Motorhomes there must fit into a standard space of about 3 by 6 m (10 by 20 ft); buses and trailers are not allowed.
