Deutsches Museum

Munich, Germany

History

A vast science and technology museum on an island in the Isar, with halls on aircraft, ships, mining and musical instruments. It is too large for one visit, so choose two or three sections in advance.

The Deutsches Museum was founded in 1903 by Oskar von Miller and opened on 7 May 1925 on Munich's Museum Island. It is one of the largest science and technology museums in the world. Besides the main building, there are four branch museums: the Flugwerft Schleissheim (1992), the Deutsches Museum Bonn (1995), the Verkehrszentrum in Munich (2003) and the Deutsches Museum Nuremberg (2021).

The main building has been undergoing extensive renovation since 2015; the first construction phase, with redesigned exhibitions, opened on 8 July 2022, and further phases are following step by step (as of October 2026). Because of its size, it is worth choosing two or three areas in advance and allowing at least half a day. Before you travel, check the museum's website to see which areas are open during the renovation. The museum is close to the city centre; if you have a motorhome, arriving by public transport is easier.
