Deadwood Historic Downtown
Deadwood, SD
A Black Hills gold-rush town whose main street of restored brick buildings recalls the days of Wild Bill Hickok. Walk Main Street, visit Mount Moriah Cemetery above town, and expect casinos and busy summer crowds.
Deadwood sprang up during the Black Hills gold rush and quickly grew to around 5,000 residents. On August 2, 1876, the gunman Wild Bill Hickok was shot dead here; he and Calamity Jane are buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery. The entire town has been a National Historic Landmark since 1961 for its well-preserved late-19th-century architecture. A great fire in September 1879 destroyed more than 300 buildings. Gambling has been legal here since 1989, which brought new revenue. The town sits at an elevation of about 1,440 m (4,715 ft).
Plan half a day to a full day: a walk along Main Street, a visit to the cemetery above town and the museums. Because casinos and summer visitors keep the town busy, it is best to arrive early in the day and ask locally about parking.
