Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge

Cornish, NH

History

A wooden covered bridge across the Connecticut River between New Hampshire and Vermont, among the longest of its kind in the country. Park by the approach, walk through it and take photos from the riverbank.

The bridge over the Connecticut River links Cornish, New Hampshire, with Windsor, Vermont. It is 449 ft 5 in long (about 137 m) and was completed in 1866 by Bela Jenks Fletcher and James Frederick Tasker. It is a Town lattice truss bridge, a lattice design that Ithiel Town patented in 1820 and 1835. It was a toll bridge until 1943; New Hampshire bought it in 1936, and the state's transportation department maintains it to this day.

The bridge still carries car traffic, with a load limit of 10 short tons (about 9 t) and a width of 24 ft (about 7.3 m). If you are driving an RV or a larger vehicle, check its weight and width before crossing. In 1970 the American Society of Civil Engineers designated it a civil engineering landmark, and in 1976 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. A parking area with an information panel is about 30 m (100 ft) south of the bridge. A visit takes 20 to 30 minutes.
