Corning Museum of Glass

Corning, NY

History

A large museum tracing glassmaking from ancient vessels to contemporary art, with live hot-glass demonstrations. Plan at least half a day, and stroll the restored Market Street in town afterwards.

The Corning Museum of Glass was founded in 1951 by Corning Glass Works as the "Corning Glass Center" to mark the company's 100th anniversary. The collection holds more than 50,000 glass objects, some over 3,500 years old, ranging from Roman pieces to contemporary art. In 2015 the Contemporary Art + Design Wing, designed by Thomas Phifer, opened. The Rakow Research Library has also been part of the museum since 1951.

At the daily "Hot Glass Shows," glassblowers shape molten glass into vases, bowls and sculptures in front of an audience; a demonstration lasts 20 to 40 minutes and is included in admission. The studio, which opened in 1996 for glassmaking classes, was expanded in October 2024. Allow at least half a day for a visit. Check the current program schedule beforehand.
