Columbus Architecture Tour

Columbus, IN

History

A small Indiana city known for an unusually rich collection of modern buildings, from churches to libraries and schools. Start at the Visitors Center downtown, pick up the self-guided map and drive between the main sites.

Because of its density of modern architecture, Columbus, Indiana, is known as the "Athens on the Prairie." The impetus came from J. Irwin Miller: his Cummins Foundation paid the architects' fees if the client chose a firm from its list. This produced buildings by Eero Saarinen, I. M. Pei, Robert Venturi, César Pelli and Richard Meier, among others. Seven buildings from 1942 to 1971 are National Historic Landmarks, and about 60 more showcase modern architecture.

An early highlight is Eliel Saarinen's First Christian Church (1942) with its tower of about 50 m (165 ft), according to Wikipedia one of America's first modern churches. The 1957 Miller House was designed by Eero Saarinen, with a garden by Dan Kiley. The Columbus Area Visitors Center provides information. The buildings are spread across the city, so a driving loop makes sense; plan on half a day to a full day.
