Cold Spring
Cold Spring, NY
A Hudson River village of antique shops and cafés that ends at a small riverfront with views of West Point. Trails to Breakneck Ridge and Bull Hill start nearby, so pair a ramble with a hike.
Cold Spring lies in the Hudson Highlands on the east bank of the Hudson River, opposite West Point. The village was incorporated in 1846, after Gouverneur Kemble had founded the West Point Foundry in 1818. During the Civil War the foundry produced the famous Parrott guns; it closed in 1911. The center of the village is the Cold Spring Historic District, with 19th-century buildings that now house boutiques, antique shops and restaurants.
One to two hours is enough for a stroll along Main Street down to the Hudson waterfront. Breakneck Ridge and Mount Taurus (Bull Hill) rise right next to the village and invite hikes. Metro-North connects the village with Grand Central Terminal in New York City, an alternative to the car if parking is tight.
