Reichsburg Cochem

Cochem, Germany

History

A castle on a vineyard hill above a bend in the Moselle. The riverside town has motorhome parking.

Reichsburg Cochem stands about 100 m above the Moselle on a conical hill above the old town. According to the castle's management, it was founded around the year 1000 under Count Palatine Ezzo and is first documented in 1051. French troops destroyed it in 1689. It lay in ruins for almost two centuries until the Berlin merchant Louis Ravené bought it in 1868 and had it rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by 1877, incorporating surviving Gothic remains. The castle has belonged to the town of Cochem since 1978.

You see the interior on guided tours of about 40 minutes; the castle tavern is open seasonally. From the car park in Endertstraße or the city car park in Pinnerstraße it is a 15 to 30 minute walk uphill, and about 45 minutes from the railway station. From May to October a shuttle bus (line 701) runs from Endertplatz to a stop about 150 m below the castle (as of October 2026). It is busy in season.
