Millennium Park and Cloud Gate
Chicago, IL
A downtown park where the mirrored Cloud Gate sculpture reflects the skyline, next to a concert pavilion and gardens. Come early or at dusk for fewer people in your photos, then walk on toward the lakefront.
Millennium Park opened on July 16, 2004, and covers 24.5 acres (about 10 hectares) within Grant Park; admission is free. The landmark is "Cloud Gate" by Anish Kapoor: 168 welded stainless-steel plates form a sculpture measuring about 33 × 66 × 42 feet (10 × 20 × 13 m) and weighing around 110 tons. Nearby are the Crown Fountain, with two 50-foot (15 m) glass-block towers (water from May to October), the Jay Pritzker Pavilion designed by Frank Gehry, and the 2.5-acre Lurie Garden.
The pavilion has 4,000 fixed seats and room for about 7,000 people on the lawn; it hosts the Grant Park Music Festival. The park sits above rail lines and underground garages and, according to Wikipedia, is considered the world's largest rooftop garden. Allow about one to two hours for the sculpture, fountain and garden. Don't drive an RV into downtown; public transit or garages are a better choice.
