Civita di Bagnoregio was founded by the Etruscans more than 2,500 years ago and sits about 120 km north of Rome on a tuff plateau above the Valle dei Calanchi. Because the clay layers beneath it are constantly eroding, the village is known as "la città che muore", the dying town. The house where St Bonaventure grew up fell from the cliff long ago. Today only around a dozen people live here permanently.
Civita can only be reached on foot, via a bridge about 300 m long, built in 1965, that leads across from Bagnoregio. An entrance fee has been charged since 2013, and the revenue goes towards maintenance and geological monitoring. Through the Porta Santa Maria gate you reach the piazza with the church of San Donato; the Museo Geologico e delle Frane explains the landslides. Spring and autumn are more pleasant, and early morning or late afternoon is quieter, with better light. Allow about two hours.
