A pedestrian street in the middle of Burlington, lined with shops, cafés and street performers, sloping toward Lake Champlain. Walk down to the waterfront at the end for sunset views over the lake and the Adirondacks.
The Church Street Marketplace covers four blocks of Church Street between Main Street and Pearl Street in downtown Burlington. The pedestrian zone opened in 1980/81 and was designed by Carr, Lynch Associates. It has around 86 shops as well as dozens of restaurants, bars and cafés, and in 2008 the American Planning Association named it one of its “Great Public Spaces”. Festivals and events take place throughout the year.
One to two hours is enough for a stroll. It is liveliest in the evening. If you arrive by motorhome, it is better to park outside the pedestrian zone and walk in. From here Main Street leads downhill to the shore of Lake Champlain, where you can watch the sunset over the lake.
