Plaza Mayor de Chinchón

An irregular, roughly oval square ringed by balconied timber houses, still used for events and markets. Park on the edge of town and sit on a terrace with the local aniseed liqueur.
The Plaza Mayor in Chinchón has an irregular layout and is surrounded by two- and three-storey houses with continuous wooden balconies. It was built from the 15th century onwards and was fully enclosed by the 17th century. There are 234 wooden balconies, supported by wooden posts. The square is also used for bullfights and serves as the stage for the Passion play “La Pasión de Chinchón”.
Chinchón lies roughly 45 to 50 km south-east of Madrid and makes a good half-day trip. Allow about two hours for the square and a walk through the town. The castle was built at the end of the 15th century, destroyed in 1520 during the Comuneros revolt and then rebuilt in the Renaissance style.
