Chester City Walls

Chester, United Kingdom

History

A near-complete circuit of Roman and medieval walls around the city, with the two-level medieval Rows shopping galleries inside. Walk part or all of the circuit, and use one of the car parks just outside the walls.

Chester's city walls enclose the old town for about 3 km (two miles) and are regarded as the most complete Roman and medieval town walls in Britain. A full circuit takes about an hour. From the top you can see, among other things, the Roman amphitheatre near Newgate, the former Roman port at Watergate, the cathedral, the Victorian Eastgate Clock, the racecourse and Morgan's Mount, a Civil War gun position.

There is access at Eastgate, Northgate, Bridgegate and Watergate, among other places; in some spots the steps are steep and the surface uneven. A walk in the morning or evening is most pleasant. You can park in the car parks outside the walls. If you want to see the Rows, the two-level shopping galleries, allow extra time.
