Cheaha State Park
Delta, AL
The summit area of the highest point in Alabama, with a stone tower and overlooks across the Talladega National Forest. Go on a clear day, and note that it can be much cooler and windier than the valley below.
Cheaha State Park is regarded as Alabama's oldest state park. It was established in 1933 and covers 2,799 acres (about 1,130 hectares) in Clay and Cleburne counties. Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in the state at about 733 m (2,405 ft), is located here. Between 1933 and 1939 the Civilian Conservation Corps built many structures, including Bunker Tower, the Bald Rock Group Lodge and stone cabins. The park borders Talladega National Forest.
From Bunker Tower and the Bald Rock boardwalk you get views over the surrounding countryside. The Pinhoti Trail system offers longer hikes and connects to the Appalachian Trail. There are campgrounds as well as chalets and cabins. A new lodge hotel was planned to open in early 2026; please ask the park in advance about construction status and any closed viewing areas (as of October 2026). One to two hours is enough for the viewpoints. Come in clear weather; the summit can be cooler and windier than the valley.
