History

A restored Carthusian and Camaldolese monastery beside the Dunajec river in the Pieniny, with a museum and a trailhead into the gorge. Pair it with a walk along the river path or a raft trip when the season allows.

Červený Kláštor (“Red Monastery”) lies at 462 metres on the Dunajec on the Polish border, about 8 km from Spišská Stará Ves. The Camaldolese monastery was founded in 1710 and dissolved in 1782 as part of Joseph II's reforms; the present village was established in 1828. The monastery building still stands today and houses a museum.

From here you can take rafting trips on the Dunajec in season or hike in the Pieniny National Park. Since 2006 a pedestrian bridge has linked the village with Sromowce Niżne in Poland. Allow half a day for the monastery and a short hike. It is busy in high season and at weekends, so arrive early in the day.
