Cerne Abbas Giant

Cerne Abbas, United Kingdom

Oddities

A huge figure of a man with a club cut into the chalk hillside above the village, best seen from the lay-by viewing area on the road. Combine it with a stroll through Cerne Abbas village below.

The Cerne Abbas Giant is a 55 m figure of a naked man holding a club, formed by trenches filled with chalk. Its age is disputed: luminescence dating points to a date between AD 700 and 1110, and the earliest written mention is from 1694. The hillside has belonged to the National Trust since 1920, and the figure has been a scheduled monument since 1924. Giant Hill also holds The Trendle, an Iron Age earthwork.

You can see the Giant from the “Giant's View” lay-by on the A352 near Cerne Abbas. A visit there takes only a few minutes; combine it with a stroll through the village. Park only in the designated lay-by and do not walk on the figure, to protect the chalk.
