Cadillac Ranch

Oddities

Ten Cadillacs buried nose-first in a wheat field and layered with decades of spray paint. Bring a can and add your own coat.

Cadillac Ranch was completed on the summer solstice of 1974: artists Chip Lord, Hudson Marquez and Doug Michels of the Ant Farm collective buried ten Cadillacs, model years 1949 to 1963, nose-first and at a slant, funded by eccentric Amarillo millionaire Stanley Marsh 3. About a year later, a segment by Charles Kuralt on CBS made the installation famous nationwide. In 1997 it was moved about 3 km (2 miles) west to get away from the growing city.

According to Texas Highways, more than 1.4 million people now visit each year. The site is on private land next to Interstate 40; you park on the frontage road and walk through an unlocked gate across the pasture to the cars. Spray-painting is openly encouraged, and the cars have long since disappeared under layers of graffiti. Every so often they are repainted completely, as in rainbow colors in 2012. Half an hour is usually enough for a visit.
