Bryggen

Bergen, Norway

History

The row of old wooden trading houses along Bergen's harbour, once part of a medieval Hanseatic trading post. Walk the narrow passages between the buildings and visit in the morning, before the cruise crowds arrive.

Bryggen is the historic harbour quarter of Bergen and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979. The Hanseatic League set up its trading office here around 1350, and from the 14th to the mid-16th century it increasingly controlled the stockfish trade; of the four major Hanseatic offices, this is the only one to survive. After fires, the last in 1955, the quarter was repeatedly rebuilt using traditional methods and on its medieval plan. Today about 60 timber buildings stand here, with narrow passages and gables facing the harbour.

The buildings house shops and restaurants. The Bryggen Museum was founded in 1976 on a site cleared by the 1955 fire, and the Hanseatic Museum shows the lives of the merchants. One to two hours is enough for the quarter, longer with the museums. The lanes are narrow and the ground uneven; come as early in the day as you can.
