Bristol Historic Downtown

Bristol, RI

History

A harbor town of Federal-style houses, with Hope Street leading past the waterfront and the bike path along the bay. It is known for its long Fourth of July tradition, so expect crowds and road closures around the holiday.

Bristol was settled in 1680 and recognized as a town in 1681; it initially belonged to Massachusetts and passed to Rhode Island in 1747. The town lies on a peninsula between Narragansett Bay and Mount Hope Bay. It is famous for its Fourth of July parade, held since 1785 and regarded as the oldest annual parade in the United States; it draws tens of thousands of visitors, and the celebrations begin as early as June 14. The Herreshoff yard built five America's Cup defenders between 1893 and 1920, which the Herreshoff Marine Museum commemorates.

The town's history also includes the slave trade of the DeWolf family, who are said to have transported more than 10,000 Africans between 1769 and 1820. The East Bay Bike Path ends at Independence Park. Allow two to three hours for the town center. Around the Fourth of July expect crowds and road closures; otherwise it is better to visit Bristol on a weekday.
