Biskupin

Biskupin, Poland

History

An open-air archaeological site with a reconstructed Iron Age fortified settlement on a lake peninsula, with wooden houses and ramparts. Good for families, especially during the autumn archaeology festival; allow two to three hours and bring a hat.

Biskupin lies on a peninsula in Lake Biskupin, about 90 km north-east of Poznań. In 1933 the teacher Walenty Szwajcer and his pupils discovered the settlement; because of its excellent preservation it was called the "Polish Pompeii". It belongs to the Lusatian culture and, according to dendrochronological data, dates to around 748/747 BC. Roughly 100 timber houses stood in a grid of eleven lanes, each 3 m wide, surrounded by a palisade more than 450 m long.

Today the site is an open-air archaeological museum with a reconstructed part of the settlement; it has been a Monument of History of Poland since 1994 and received a European Heritage Award in 2006. Allow two to three hours; in summer a hat and sun protection are sensible, as there is little shade. Depending on the source, the period is described as the late Bronze Age or the early Iron Age.
