Biesbosch National Park
Drimmelen, Netherlands
A freshwater tidal landscape of creeks, reed beds and willow woods south of Dordrecht, best seen by boat or canoe. Book a boat trip or rental in advance, and bring insect repellent in summer.
De Biesbosch National Park covers about 90 square kilometres in North Brabant and South Holland and is regarded as one of the last extensive freshwater tidal areas in north-western Europe. It was created by the St Elizabeth's flood of 1421, which submerged about 300 square kilometres of polder land. The park was established in 1994. Today willow woods and reeds shape the landscape, an important resting place for geese and waterfowl.
Beavers had spread widely by 2014, white-tailed eagles have bred in the area for several years, and in 2016 the first ospreys hatched in the Netherlands were born here. Drimmelen is one of the access points. The best way to explore is by boat or canoe; book excursion boats or rental boats in advance and allow several hours up to a full day. In summer, bring insect repellent.
