Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe

Kassel, Germany

History

A large hillside park with a giant statue of Hercules at the top and a long series of cascades running down toward the palace. Wear comfortable shoes for the climb, and check the days when the water features run.

The Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe in Kassel covers 2.4 square kilometres and is regarded as the largest hillside park in Europe. Construction began in 1696 under Landgrave Charles and was extended over some 150 years; a Romantic landscape park was added after 1785. Its landmark is the 71-metre-high Hercules monument at an altitude of 515 metres. The cascades lead down from the octagon below it; there is a height difference of around 240 metres between Hercules and the palace. Wilhelmshöhe Palace stands at about 282 metres and houses a picture gallery and a collection of antiquities; the artificial ruin of the Löwenburg was built in 1793–1800. The park has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2013.

The water features run in the summer months only on certain days; refer to the operator's current schedule for dates. They last about 75 minutes. For Hercules, the cascades and the palace, allow half a day to a full day and wear sturdy shoes for the climb.
