National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum

Cooperstown, NY

History

A museum on Main Street in a lakeside village, with plaques of the game's greats and halls of bats, jerseys and ballpark memorabilia. Even non-fans enjoy the small-town setting; arrive early in summer when the streets fill up.

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum stands on Main Street in Cooperstown and opened on June 12, 1939. Its founder was Stephen C. Clark. The choice of location goes back to the legend, since debunked by historians, that Abner Doubleday invented baseball here in the 1830s. The museum holds more than 40,000 three-dimensional objects, over 250,000 photographs and more than three million documents in its research center. Its best-known area is the Plaque Gallery, with plaques honoring every inductee.

Allow several hours for your visit, even if you are not a fan. In summer, come early, because crowds fill the museum and the village center.
