Bamberg Old Town

Bamberg, Germany

History

A hilly old town spread across the banks of the Regnitz, with a cathedral, the old town hall on a bridge island and a quarter of fishermen's houses. Park outside the centre and explore on foot, ideally with time to try the local smoked beer.

Bamberg, in Upper Franconia in Bavaria, lies on seven hills, each topped by a church, which is why the city has been compared with Rome. King Henry II founded the bishopric here in 1007, and the old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. It consists of three historic core areas that have kept their medieval structure. The Late Romanesque cathedral contains the tomb of the founding couple by Tilman Riemenschneider and the Bamberg Horseman.

The Old Town Hall stands on an island in the River Regnitz and can be reached by two bridges. Alongside it, the fishermen's houses of Little Venice line the bank. More than 4,500 roses bloom in the rose garden of the New Residence (1698–1704). Bamberg is known for its smoked beer, which you can try in several brewery taverns. Allow half a day to a full day for the old town and park on the edge of the centre.
