Baie de Somme at Saint-Valery
Saint-Valery-sur-Somme, France
One of the largest estuaries in northern France, with vast sandflats, seals and birds, and a steam railway that runs along the shore. Check the tide tables before you walk out onto the flats.
The Baie de Somme is one of the great estuaries of northern France. At low tide the sea withdraws about 14 km. The nature reserve protects around 3,000 ha of mudflats, salt marsh and dunes. It is home to the largest harbour seal colony in France, along with grey seals; numbers vary, but run to several hundred animals. More than 300 bird species also stop here. In 1066 Saint-Valery-sur-Somme was the point from which William the Conqueror's fleet set out before he conquered England. A steam railway, the Chemin de Fer de la Baie de Somme, links Le Crotoy, Noyelles, Saint-Valery and Cayeux-sur-Mer.
The best time to watch seals is at low tide, roughly between Le Hourdel and Saint-Quentin-en-Tourmont; keep at least 300 m away and bring binoculars. Never walk out onto the flats on your own: channels shift, there is quicksand, and the tide comes in faster than you can walk. Guided crossings take several hours.
