Dignity
Chamberlain, SD
A 50-foot stainless-steel statue of a Native woman holding a star quilt, standing at an I-90 rest area above the Missouri River. Best in late light.
"Dignity: Of Earth & Sky" stands on a bluff above the Missouri River near Chamberlain. The 50-foot (15 m) stainless-steel sculpture by Dale Lamphere was erected in 2016 and honors the culture of the Lakota and Dakota peoples. It shows a woman in a dress modeled on a traditional 1850s two-hide dress, holding a star quilt whose more than 100 blue diamonds move in the wind. At night the diamonds are lit by LEDs.
The statue stands at the welcome center on I-90 at mile marker 264, between exits 263 and 265. Visiting is free and possible year-round; the welcome center itself is open only from mid-May through October. The large parking lot is wheelchair accessible. A walk around the statue and some photos take 20 to 30 minutes, making it a good break on a drive across South Dakota.
