Denali Visitor Center

Denali Park, AK

Nature

The starting point for Denali National Park, with exhibits, trails and the bus depot for the park road, which private cars can drive only for the first 15 miles.

The Denali Visitor Center sits at mile 1.5 (about 2.4 km) of the Denali Park Road and is open from mid-May to mid-September. Exhibits on the landscape and wildlife through the seasons, and the roughly 20-minute film "Heartbeats of Denali" introduce the park. The campus also has a bookstore, the Morino Grill restaurant and, across the way, the Alaska Railroad depot.

The park road is about 148 km (92 miles) long, but private vehicles may only drive the first 24 km (15 miles) to Savage River. Beyond that you travel by bus from the Denali Bus Depot at mile 0.75: narrated tours or cheaper transit buses that let you get off and back on along the way. Because of the Pretty Rocks landslide, buses turned around at mile 43 (East Fork) in 2026; the new bridge is finished, and buses are expected to run the full road again from 2027 (as of October 2026). Riley Creek Mercantile has a free RV dump station for park campground guests.
