Melnik Sand Pyramids
Melnik, Bulgaria
Eroded sandstone towers and ridges surrounding Bulgaria’s smallest town. A path from Melnik climbs among them to Rozhen Monastery in about 90 minutes.
The sand pyramids at the foot of the Pirin Mountains are scattered around Melnik and the village of Rozhen; some formations reach 100 m in height. They consist of Miocene and Pliocene sediments, shaped by rain, wind and the Melnishka river, a process that continues today. They have been protected as a natural monument since 1960. Melnik is regarded as Bulgaria's smallest town, and the area is also known for its red wine.
A path leads from Melnik across steep slopes above the pyramids to Rozhen Monastery, founded in the 13th century. Depending on the source it is 3 to 6 km long and takes one and a half to three hours each way, and some sections are narrow, with steep drops. If you would rather walk less, park at the monastery; viewpoints are a short stroll from there. The light is especially atmospheric in the evening.
