Balchik Palace

Balchik, Bulgaria

History

The seaside villa of Romania’s Queen Marie, a mix of minaret and Balkan house, with terraced botanical gardens and a large cactus collection.

The Balchik Palace was built from 1924 for Queen Marie of Romania, when the region belonged to Romania; the complex was completed in the mid-1930s. Italian architects built it. The style is deliberately eclectic: Bulgarian, Byzantine and Moorish elements combine with a minaret-like tower and a chapel. The terraces descend to the Black Sea. Balchik has belonged to Bulgaria since the Treaty of Craiova in 1940.

Depending on the source, the botanical garden holds between two and three thousand plant species; its cactus collection is regarded as the second largest in Europe after Monaco. The palace stands right on the coast in the town of Balchik; besides the main building, the complex includes a wine cellar, a chapel and a minaret, spread over several terraces.
