One of Ireland’s largest megalithic cemeteries, with dozens of stone circles and passage tombs scattered across fields below Knocknarea.
Carrowmore near Sligo is regarded as one of the largest megalithic cemeteries in Ireland. Heritage Ireland describes the site as around 6,000 years old. There were once more monuments; today more than 30 survive, mostly stone circles of large boulders with burial chambers. Swedish excavations led by Göran Burenhult (1977–1982 and 1994–1998) fully or partly investigated ten tombs. Among the highlights is the Listoghil chamber. In the background rises Knocknarea, topped by the cairn of Queen Maeve.
The site is open seasonally; in 2026, according to Heritage Ireland, the season runs until 2 December (as of October 2026), while another source gives an earlier end, so please check before you go. It lies about 4 km from the centre of Sligo. The paths are uneven and wheelchair access is limited. Allow about one to two hours for a walk across the fields and a visit to the visitor centre; guided tours are available on site.
