Abisko Canyon

A short gorge where the Abiskojåkka river cuts through layered rock before reaching Torneträsk. A walk of a few minutes from the national park centre, and the start of the Kungsleden trail.
The Abiskojåkka river flows through a narrow gorge in Abisko National Park, with rock walls shaped by the water and small cascades, before it reaches Lake Torneträsk. The national park was founded in 1909, making it one of Sweden's oldest. The canyon lies close to the Naturum visitor centre and the Abisko Turiststation; a loop of about 1.6 km takes roughly half an hour, crossing a bridge and passing viewpoints. Part of the path is wheelchair accessible.
The Kungsleden, the long-distance trail of about 440 km, also starts at the Turiststation. The northern section to Nikkaluokta is 107 km and takes five to seven days. Getting there: the E10 runs past the park, and trains stop at the Turiststation. There is parking south of the railway line and near the Naturum; check charges and rules on site. In summer, the canyon makes a good evening stroll.
