Cafés and lifeguard huts on tall stilts stand on a beach up to 2 km wide, reached by long wooden boardwalks. Cars may park on parts of the sand for a fee; keep an eye on the tide.
St Peter-Ording has 13 stilt houses right on the beach, plus one on land, the Erlebnis-Hus. They stand seven metres high, are built of larch and rest on about 4,000 piles driven into the sand; diagonal piles protect them against storm surges and ice. The buildings house restaurants, lifeguard stations, changing rooms, toilets and beach-chair rental. The first stilt building, the “Giftbude”, was built in 1911; the 1935 storm surge destroyed the Giftbude on Ording beach.
On the Eiderstedt peninsula, cars may drive and park on the beach, which is up to 2 km wide, at Ording and Böhl, but only from 15 March to 31 October (as of October 2026). A 30 km/h speed limit applies; overnight stays and camping are forbidden, motorhomes included. On firm sand you do not need four-wheel drive, but take care in loose sand. Visitor’s tax is payable in addition to the parking fee. Check times and tides before you go, especially at high water.
