Doñana: El Acebuche

The main visitor centre of Doñana National Park, with boardwalks through pine and scrub to bird hides over a lagoon. Access to the heart of the park is only on guided 4x4 or boat tours, which are worth booking ahead.
El Acebuche is one of the main visitor centres of Doñana National Park, about 3 km from Matalascañas on the A-483; an access road of roughly 2 km leads in from the turn-off. It has a reception, an exhibition about the park, a room for audiovisual presentations and a cafeteria. Two trails start here: to the Laguna del Acebuche and to the Lagunas del Huerto y las Pajas. The path to the Laguna del Acebuche is a level wooden boardwalk, usable even with reduced mobility, and passes eight bird hides.
Allow about an hour for the round trip. The purple swamphen can be seen all year; in spring you may also find, among others, mallard, common pochard, little and great crested grebes and night heron, and in autumn and winter gadwall and wigeon. Autumn and winter are considered the best time, provided the lagoon holds water. Bookable 4x4 tours into the park start from the centre. The free car park has about 100 spaces for cars; wild overnighting in a motorhome is not allowed outside designated areas.
