Angel Oak
Johns Island, SC

The Angel Oak is a Southern live oak on Johns Island near Charleston. The tree is more than 65 feet (20 m) tall but grows mainly outward: its canopy shades about 17,000 square feet (1,600 m²), the longest limb stretches nearly 90 feet (27 m), and many limbs rest heavily on the ground. Its age is usually put at 400 to 500 years, though some claim much more. The name comes from the Angel family, who owned the land; in 1991 the City of Charleston bought the site and made it a public park.
A visit is short, and a little under an hour is usually enough. Admission is free, and the park keeps set opening hours that you should check in advance.
