Concrete caissons of the artificial harbour towed across the Channel in 1944 still lie in an arc offshore. See them best from the clifftop viewpoint east of the town at low tide.
After the Normandy landings, the Allies built one of the two artificial harbours (“Mulberry”) at Arromanches. It went into operation on 14 June 1944 and included floating roadways on steel and concrete pontoons. In its first 100 or so days of use, 2.5 million men, 500,000 vehicles and 4 million tonnes of supplies were landed here. The harbour was designed to last three months and stayed in use for considerably longer.
At low tide the surviving concrete caissons offshore are especially easy to make out. The cliff east of the town, near the 360° cinema, offers a good overview. In the town, the Landing Museum, which opened in 1954, tells the story of the harbour. Check the tide table beforehand.
