A 26 km tour road through the siege lines of 1863, lined with over 1,300 monuments, plus the raised Union ironclad USS Cairo. Allow half a day; the road is one-way and fine for RVs.
The park commemorates the siege of Vicksburg, which lasted from May 18 to July 4, 1863, and ended with the victory of Union forces under Ulysses S. Grant over the Confederates under John C. Pemberton. Established in 1899, it protects trenches and fortifications above the Mississippi River. More than 1,300 monuments and markers line the 26 km (16 mile) tour road. The national cemetery, established in 1866, holds more than 17,000 Union soldiers, nearly 13,000 of them unknown.
A highlight is the USS Cairo Museum. The Cairo, a river ironclad, was sunk in the Yazoo River in December 1862, becoming the first warship in history to be sunk by a remotely detonated mine, and was raised in 1964. The visitor center shows an orientation film of about 20 minutes. For the drive with several stops, plan on half a day.
