Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge has protected about 845 hectares (2,088 acres) of subtropical riverside forest along the Rio Grande since 1943, south of Alamo in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. The refuge includes woodland and wetlands. So far almost 400 bird species have been recorded, among them green jays and plain chachalacas, which in the US occur almost only in South Texas. More than 300 butterfly species also live here, nearly half of all those found in the United States.
There are more than 20 km (12 miles) of hiking trails, a 12 m (40-foot) observation tower, a canopy walk and photo blinds. The Malachite Trail is paved and wheelchair accessible. The visitor center is not open every day, so check its hours before you go. Cycling is allowed on the Wildlife Drive, a 7-mile (11 km) paved loop, and from November through March a tram runs there. The refuge lies along major bird migration routes.
