A pueblo on a sandstone mesa top 110 m high, inhabited for about 1,000 years. Visits are by guided tour only from the Sky City Cultural Center; photography requires a permit.
Acoma Sky City stands on a sandstone mesa that rises about 367 feet (112 m) above the plain. It is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America; according to the National Trust, it dates to around 1150. Today only about 50 people, mostly elders, live in the 300-plus adobe and sandstone houses. The mission church of San Esteban del Rey was built between 1629 and 1641, and its beams were hauled from Mount Taylor, about 40 miles (64 km) away. It survived the Pueblo Revolt of 1680.
You can visit only on a guided tour led by members of the Pueblo. It starts at the Sky City Cultural Center and its Haak’u Museum, near exit 102 of I-40. From there you take a short ride up to the mesa; depending on the source, the walking tour lasts a little over an hour to 90 minutes. Artisans display and sell their work. Check tour times and photography rules on the Pueblo’s website beforehand.
