Silver Falls State Park, at 9,200 acres (about 3,700 hectares), is Oregon’s largest state park and lies roughly 60 miles (97 km) south of Portland in the Cascade foothills. It is known for the Trail of Ten Falls, which passes ten waterfalls. The tallest is Double Falls at 178 feet (54 m), while South Falls measures 177 feet (54 m). The trail passes directly behind several falls, including South Falls and North Falls. The usual starting point is the South Falls Day Use Area.
Depending on the source, the full loop is about 7.8 to 8 miles (12.5 to 13 km) long, with roughly 1,300 feet (400 m) of climbing, and takes three to five hours; shorter loops are possible. Summer is the busiest season, and early morning is the quietest time to go. Parking at the South Falls Day Use Area requires a fee; the park has tent and RV sites as well as cabins.
