The best known of the painted churches of Bucovina, founded in 1488, whose Last Judgement on the west wall is painted in a deep blue. A UNESCO site; dress modestly and go early to avoid the tour groups.
Prince Stephen the Great of Moldavia had Voroneț Monastery built in 1488; according to the inscription, work began on 26 May and was finished in September of the same year. In 1547, under Metropolitan Grigorie Roșca, a porch was added and the outer walls were painted. The Last Judgement on the west wall, painted in the characteristic “Voroneț blue”, is famous. Since 1993 the church has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Churches of Moldavia”. Monastic life ended in the late 18th century and resumed in 1991 with a community of nuns.
The monastery lies about 4 km south of Gura Humorului and is reached by the DJ177A, which branches off the DN17. Other painted monasteries nearby include Humor, Sucevița, Moldovița and Arbore. An hour is usually enough for the church and its exterior paintings. As this is a working monastery, modest dress is advisable.
